RAWALPINDI TO SKARDU KKH ROUTE
Islamabad to Abottabad:
Early morning start from Islamabad to Abottabad. There are three routes from Islamabad to Abottabad. The prettiest route is via Taxila. The road passes the door of Taxila Museum and near six of the more important sites.. at the end of the Taxila valley the read crossed the Harro River at Khanpur Dam, then descends to the bottom of a steep valley. Shortly after the railway crossing at the beginning of Haripur Township take the right fork. It takes 2 ½ hours from Islamabad and the distance is 121km. Take a cup of tea at Abottabad and start towards Besham.
Abottabad to Besham:
After 24 km from Abottabad you will reach Mansehra. Just before Mnasehra the road divides, left to the Indus and the KKH, right to the Kaghan Valley and Muzaffarabad, on the old road to Kashmir. After the Mansehra the KKH itself follows a picturesque valley, with a shallow boulder-strewn river on the left, then climbs up into mature pine forests. After passing through a small gorge with cliffs of white china clay, the road drops down into a wide fertile bowl with views up to the Black Mountains in the distance. Climbing out of the Bowl through another smaller forest, you reach the Nandhiar watershed at Shakul. This makes a lovely place to break your journey.
After passing the Shakul you will find the Thakot Bridge over the Indus. The first evidence of Chinese influence on the KKH is Thakot Bridge, 123 Kilometers and about two and a half-hours drive from Abottabad.
Besham:
A small bazaar strung along the KKH, Besham is cut into the hillside above the Indus 28 kilometers from Thakot bridge. Here the new road from Mansehra and one of the old trade routes from Swat join. Halfway between Islamabad and Gilgit.
From the PTDC rest house at Besham you can scramble down to the Grey sandy shores of the Indus.
In Besham PTDC motel you can do the lunch and take a little rest and again starting your journey towards Chilas. Total time from Abottabad to Besham is about around 5 hours.
Besham to Chilas:
After 15 Kilometers you will reach Dobair Bazaar, is a typical Kohistani settlement with wooden bazaar stall flanking the road Appox. 40 km from Besham there is a village Pattan, with a bridge across the Indus and a jeep track leading up the Palas Valley on the other side a memorial by the road down to Pattan stands.
At Komila/Dasu the road crosses to the east bank of the Indus. After 60 km from Patten you will reach Chilas. From Besham to Chilas it takes 5 to 6 hours.
In Chilas there is few good kind hotels because in summer season many tourist stay in Chilas for overnight before leaving to Skardu or Hunza (If some one wants to go Gilgit then its better that he will stay in Besham because from Chilas, Gilgit is only 2 ½ hours drive). Good hotels are Shangri-La Chilas, Chilas Inn and Panorama Hotel.
Chilas to Skardu:
Early morning start towards Skardu after a hour drive you can feel the depressing mass of Nanga Parbat louring above you, too close for comfort, too close to show its beauty. It is infect a series of successive ridges culminating in an ice crest 8,125 meters high, the ninth highest peak in the world.
Raikot Bridge carries the KKH to the north bank of the Indus.
The junction of the Indus and the Gilgit rivers, 37 km down from Gilgit Town, is the turn-off point for the road to Skardu. The Skardu road crosses the Gilgit River on Alam Bridge.
The single-lane, hard-topped road highs the north bank of the Indus for 170 km to Skardu.
At Hanuchal, 22 km from the turn-off, the Indus reaches the most northerly point in its 3,200-km journey to the sea. Blocked on the north by Rakaposhi and Haramosh, it is squeezed between high cliffs and forced to turn and find a way around the West Side of Nanga Parbat to the plains of the Punjab.
There are no such terrors on the modern road. The remaining journey to Skardu is relatively easy.
So after 6-7 hours from Alam bridge you will reach Skardu
